STRIJDOM PARK – Here are a few quick facts to shed light on car seat safety courtesy of car seat experts Wheel Well.


Wheel Well identified as an organisation which is for children and road safety. The organisation hosted an extensive and informative class on car seat safety for media which will be available to the public in due course.

Here are a few standout tips, tricks and myths everyone who is in the league of extraordinary child-minding should know:

* Behind the passenger seat is the safest place to put the car seat

* Just being in a car seat gives your child an 80 per cent higher chance of remaining safe in the event of an accident

* Infant seats can be used from birth to 15 months/until the child outgrows it

* How you tell if a child has outgrown an infant seat is if their head is above the edge of the seat while they’re seated inside it

* A car seat should never be used as a bed

* On the car seat, blue guides are for rear-faced seats and red guides are for forward-facing

* Toddler seats should stay in the vehicle

* Toddler seats can be used until 18kg or until the child is four years old.

* Booster seats can be used for tall four-year-olds

* Booster seats should not be used with lap seat belts as it is not sufficient protection

* There are multi-stage seats which can be used from 9–36kgs but consumers must check that they are certified

* Familiarise yourself with the manuals to ensure that your car seat ticks as many boxes across all stages.
