Selkirk Avenue development kicks off

RANDBURG – Outgoing Mayor Herman Mashaba was joined by MMC for Housing Meshack van Wyk and officials from the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) for the soil-turning event of the City's new social housing project on 11 November.

Outgoing Mayor Herman Mashaba was joined by MMC for Housing Meshack van Wyk and officials from the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) for the soil-turning event of the City’s new social housing project on 11 November.

After months of the land on Selkirk Avenue near the Randburg Licencing Department being unoccupied, and the uncertainty of development of the land and residents growing increasingly concerned around the state of unoccupied land, the project has finally kicked off.

It is believed that around 150 units of a total of around 600 will be developed in phase one of the project.

Mashaba said the development will be strategically placed to house previously disadvantaged and low-income individuals to the transport hub of the Randburg CBD to be closer to work and schooling opportunities. “This project is right in the heart of Blairgowrie. Where people can have access to various facilities around this area. The area is situated next to major transport terminals, including Randburg taxi rank and the Rea Vaya bus terminal.”

The project has been predicted to take two years to complete and will cost R102 million.

Mashaba said he was pleased that the City had created low-cost housing and turning many parts of the City into a construction site.

According to Ward 102 councillor David Potter, the property will be separated into 17 different sections and there are various City Departments involved in the overall Randburg Civic Triangle and the open land.

These departments include the Joburg Property Company, the City of Johannesburg Transportation Department, and the Johannesburg Social Housing Company.
