Elimination of crimes against women and children this #16DaysOfActivism

JOHANNESBURG – In South Africa, children were added to the campaign as a major concern due to the increasing violence against children experienced in the country, said the South African Police Service in a statement.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said in a released statement that the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for No Violence Against Women is an annual campaign observed globally to raise awareness, address policy and legal issues, as well as to campaign for the protection of the survivors of violence and to call for the elimination of crimes against women and children.

“The campaign is held annually from 25 November to 10 December and was officially recognised by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1999,” said SAPS.

SAPS added that in South Africa, creating awareness about violence against children was added to the campaign due to the increasing violence against children experienced in the country.

“This campaign gained momentum over the years and has a prominent place in some of the key sectors of our society. The primary focus of this campaign is to increase awareness about the crimes against women and children and vulnerable groups,” said SAPS.

The campaign is in line with SAPS’s strategic objectives; especially the prevention and combating of crimes in communities, therefore the SAPS will play a major role in this campaign.

The SAPS is planning to present national, provincial and station events with a specific focus on the elimination of crimes against women and children, as part of this campaign.
