Criminal charges laid against Sharonlea dumpers

SHARONLEA – The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) enforcement team, has proceeded to lay criminal charges against the culprit at the Douglasdale Police Station.

Investigations into the details surrounding the illegal dumping of an alleged dangerous black chemical substance into the Sharonlea Spruit continued this week.

According to Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development enforcement team has proceeded to lay criminal charges against the culprit at the Douglasdale Police Station.

Cele said interviews were conducted with the owner of the vehicle and a statement was taken from the witness who recorded the original video.

“The Environment and Infrastructure Services Department in the City is in the process of finalising a compliance order related to charges of dumping hazardous waste and for the culprit to clean [up] the hazardous waste dumped in the area concerned,” he added.

Many users of social media have also pleaded for other government officials to get involved and according to Cele, have successfully drawn the attention of the Minister of Environmental, Forestry and Fisheries, Barbara Creecy in this matter.

“I am encouraged by the cooperation of all the levels of government (local, provincial, national) in dealing with this matter transparently, and with the laws of the Republic of South Africa,” Cele concluded.
