Mayor gives homes to 94 Zandspruit residents

ZANDSPRUIT – Mayor Herman Mashaba handed over title deeds to 94 new eager homeowners in Zandspruit.

Outgoing Mayor Herman Mashaba joined community members of Zandspruit, MMC for Housing Meshack van Wyk, as well as various City officials to hand over title deeds to 94 new eager homeowners during the morning of 14 November.

Some residents who have been waiting over 25 years for the promise of a new home broke down in tears after receiving their title deeds for their new homes. The low-cost housing development will ensure each home has a proper supply of electricity, water and sanitation, but most importantly, formal ownership of a home for generations to come.

In January this year, the area where the development will take place was proclaimed as a township, which enabled the City of Johannesburg to extend basic services to the area.

Van Wyk said, “It is very easy to be comfortable while our people are suffering in other areas. This development will certainly help to restore some dignity to the people of Zandspruit, and it is so exciting. The last time we were here only a few months ago, it was only bush. Now we can see the vision that we had in mind, and we are ready to begin construction.

“We asked the people of Zandspruit to make sure that the area did not become land invaded, otherwise construction could not take place, and they made sure that this was not the case. They proved that this was not a want, this was a need.

“Gone are the days when the issuing of title deed is politicised, where deeds are issued during election time in exchanged for votes. This is happening, voting or not.”

Mashaba added, “The City is also working on 701 future sites and service stands in Zandspruit where residents will be given title deeds to serviced sections of land to build their own homes. It is important to highlight that, including the building of tar roads in the area, this project is the first major development in Zandspruit since the dawn of democracy.
