Most of us have cars, and we keep them clean, checked and serviced regularly. Do you do the same with your body?
This was the message conveyed to men at The Fairway Hotel’s High Ball Craft Bar while they had fun donning fetching moustaches and wrapping trees in blue in support of Movember at an event at the hotel on 6 November.

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during November to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide.

One of the emcees for the event Emmanuel Pietersen said, “There is so much attention and events placed on breast, cervical and ovarian cancer, and sometimes male forms of cancer get neglected when it comes to its awareness. This is why Movember is so important, as it makes people talk about the issue.”

Guvon Hotel’s Leon Bosch said, “This event is a fantastic initiative for us as a hotel to drive support in the fight against prostate cancer and testicular cancer, and raise awareness about it. There is a constant discussion of women’s cancer, and sometimes men can feel a bit neglected. By raising awareness about the issue, it can encourage more men to get themselves tested and help stop cancer in its tracks.”

The guest speaker from Cansa Munnik Marais said, “Awareness is important. It’s a little known thing, but it affects one in five men in South Africa, and early detection is of utmost importance.

“Take yourself for an annual test, and it’s as simple as a finger prick that could be the difference between life and death. Nobody knows your body as well as you do. If you feel something is wrong, go to your doctor and get it checked out.”

Taking inspiration from a similar initiative in Beaufort West, the hotel and the guests wrapped trees along the golf course in blue material to symbolise their support for the cause.

“It’s the same concept as what has been done for female cancer support when trees were wrapped in pink. It is a great cause that we are proud to be a part of,” said the Fairway Hotel’s Cherelee Oosthuizen.
