Randburg Bowls Club hosts Test Match between ‘Springboks’ and ‘International’ sides

BOSKRUIN – 'Springboks' take on ' International' side in bowls Test Match at Randburg Bowls Club.


Randburg Bowls Club celebrated the opening of their bowls greens for the new season, by running their eighth Test Match between the ‘Springboks’ and the ‘International’ sides.

In this match, South African-born club members take on those with international heritage.

The countries represented included Hungary, Latvia, The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Scotland, England and Jamaica.

Once the playing of the national anthems was finished, the competition began. The bowls was played in a good spirit with a lot of fun and laughter being enjoyed. But the competition was serious with both sides trying their hardest to win the trophy.

South Africa was victorious on five occasions. The international side were the reigning champions and were determined to retain the trophy.

Lawrence Hillery, the captain of the international side said before things kicked off, “We won the match last year, and we are determined to win it this year, I think we have chosen a strong enough side to keep the trophy in our hands.”

After an afternoon of fun, skilled and competitive bowls, the international side emerged victorious, winning the day convincingly by over 100 points. Kevin Celliers, the captain of the South African side, vowed that the Springboks will be back and victorious next year.

President of the bowls club, Laurie Stafford commented, “This is typical of the events that we at Randburg Bowls Club run. It was a fun day, played in the best of spirits, catering for all of our members. The youngest player was 14, and the oldest player was 84. Bowls is for all ages.”

Stafford added that the club welcomes all players, whether experienced or new. “We have a number of coaches willing to show beginners the ropes – come and give it a try.”
