Northwold gets a bit brighter

NORTHWOLD – Installation of streetlights will take place on various streets in the Northwold area.

Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele is hoping to brighten up the lives of Northwold residents after announcing the installation of streetlights on various streets in the area.

City of Joburg teams has been hard at work since 20 September in a four-week project, installing brand new streetlights on roads that have never had them before.

Cele said, “This project is very important for the suburb. In areas where there were no or poor lighting, safety and security was a concern.”

He added that due to the suburb being historically agriculturally zoned, streetlights were not installed on certain streets for a long time after residential development flourished.

“When I started out as a ward councillor in 2016, my main goal was to implement these kinds of services for residents to feel safer and secure.”

Cele said he had been submitting requests from residents for the streetlights since 2017.

“We always get updates from residents asking what kind of developments they want, and the streetlight issue was a big concern. As streetlights are considered a capital project, it took a while for the City to budget for it.

“I would like to thank the City for engaging with this project, and I would like to thank residents for raising these concerns over the years, this is very much a resident-driven project.”
