The Honeydew police arrested two suspects for allegedly attempting to illegally connect electricity on 16 September.
Patrolling police vehicles of the Johannesburg West District, headed by Captain MD Lalwane, spotted the two suspects aged 47 and 36 while on patrol during the late evening in the Zandspruit area.
According to Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, the two were caught in the act allegedly attempting to connect illegally to a nearby street pole using a wooden ladder.
Muthan said, “We need to shed more light on this issue. The majority of electricity connections in Zandspruit have been illegally connected to the City’s infrastructure, and it costs the City millions in damages. It is for this reason that a few months ago, when the City came to disconnect illegal connections along Beyers Naude Drive that we were faced with protests.
“Not only are these connections illegal, but it is also a highly dangerous activity. In many instances of cable theft and the connection of electricity illegally, people injure themselves or even die. People need to realise that this is a very dangerous crime and is punishable by law.”
The suspects will appear soon in court to face charges of malicious damage to state property, as well as charges in accordance with the Illegal Connection Electricity Act.
Muthan added the Honeydew Police Station commander Brigadier Anesh Maharaj would like to congratulate the police members involved in the arrest.
