Simple acts of kindness in Blairgowrie

BLAIRGOWRIE – Kelly-Ann van der Meer, who started One Small Act of Kindness, explains what inspired her to form the local charity group.

To change our community, it does not need one to move mountains, rather, it needs people who are willing to change it with a single act of kindness at a time.

Local charity, One Small Act of Kindness, an organisation that was spawned by Kelly-Ann van der Meer, started about three years ago in the lead up to Father’s Day. “I asked myself what happens to the fathers who have no one,” she said in contemplation.

So began the group’s first initiative which was centred on collecting socks and chocolates for dads in the community. Suffice to say, it has been three years, and they have not lost the momentum to assist where they can.

The work done by the charity not only caters to the Randburg community but trickles into many other communities in our beautiful city and at times country. You might remember one of the organisation’s most memorable initiative which saw them call the community to action with the simple request to drop off water for the animals affected by the Western Cape drought. A cool 60 tons of water was raised for the various animal shelters.

The group has lead and continues to lead initiatives that have helped old aged homes, schoolchildren, animals, displaced people, the elderly, and the fellow man in need of a hand-up.

It is Van der Meer’s firm belief that encourages her to think that, should the organisation keep its current momentum, it will make a big impact on many more lives. “This does not include the blessings it has brought the volunteers’ lives who see the impact it has on those the organisation helps regularly,” she shared.
