On 1 July, our beloved suburb Randburg turned 60 years old – where the time has gone? As part of the suburb’s whopping six decades, the Randburg Sun and Randburg SPCA have collaborated to bring you the #BirthdayBrick campaign.
We have been particularly blown away by the Lok family which donated 31 bricks, that totalled at R1 860, for the non-profit organisation.
Lauren Lok is a Randpark Ridge resident who caught wind of the #BirthdayBrick initiative in our birthday feature dispatched at the end of June and available online on our website www.randburgsun.co.za. The #BirthdayBrick campaign allows community members to purchase a brick from the Randburg SPCA at R60 each. All proceeds go to the animal shelter and its maintenance needs. The bricks are personalised with the buyer’s name and surname on a plaque which is attached to a brick at the Randburg SPCA. So far the initiative has had two donations and eagerly welcomed many more, before the unique fundraising activity’s ends in August.
Lok emphasised that if she is in a position to help, she does. Being an avid animal lover, Lok commented on how she has always been hyper-aware of the struggle the organisation faced where finances are concerned, especially in the current financial climate. Lok explained that she has brought up her children to love and value the presence of pets because they teach children the ‘value of caring for something’. This is a core principle which she has also passed on to her grandchildren which is why organisations such as the SPCA remain near and dear to her heart.
General manager of the Randburg SPCA Craig Rudman was pleased with the significant donation. Rudman has mentioned in the past that operating costs remain the largest challenge where the upkeep of the organisation is concerned.
