A site visit for Bordeaux road concerns

BORDEAUX – 'Due to the ageing water infrastructure in many suburbs, along with the cold of winter, the old water pipes are prone to regular bursts.'

Ward 102 councillor David Potter and MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager conducted an oversight visit with senior officials of Joburg Water to road work reinstatements that remain outstanding in the suburb on 2 July.

Potter said, “Due to the ageing water infrastructure in many suburbs, along with the cold of winter, the old water pipes are prone to regular bursts. With the bursts comes the need to dig paving, kerb-stones or tar to expose the water pipe and repair it.”

According to Potter, the Johannesburg Roads Agency promised ward councillors of Johannesburg Region B that reinstatements would be attended to in May 2019, but seem to be struggling with effecting this promise.

An oversight visit was conducted to evaluate the state of the suburb where digging has taken place as well as to evaluate the outstanding work orders for curbing and tar reinstatements in the suburb of Bordeaux.

“The delays related to reinstatements remain of great concern, with the matter recently being escalated by me to the city executive including the executive mayor of the City, the mayoral committee member for transport, the speaker of council and the chief whip of council,” said Potter.

Furthermore, the residents of Bordeaux South have signed a petition asking for the replacement of water pipes in the suburb, with the petition having been submitted to the City of Joburg last week.

Potter concluded, “I am looking forward to an urgent intervention to ensure that all outstanding reinstatements are completed by the Joburg Roads Agency as a matter of urgency.”
