Help a local Scout get to the USA

FERNDALE – The community is urged to come together to help raise funds for a local Scout.

Randburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry would like the community to come together to help raise funds for a local Scout with big dreams of participating in the 24th World Scout Jamboree to be held in West Virginia, USA.

Scout with the 1st Randburg Scouts Group, Nissan Munguambe said through Scouts he not only learns new concepts and gains different experiences, he also gets do activities he loves. “We learn leadership skills, pioneering and things that schools sometimes don’t teach. I love first aid, I recently just completed a course and I learned a lot from it.”

Nissan will soon take part in the jamboree which costs about R60 000. He is now looking to raise another R15 000 to add to any additional costs the trip may need – and to do this he needs the community’s help.

This event is special to him as it would help him meet new people and learn about new cultures. It will also be his first trip overseas. “I would also learn new skills from the people I meet as every Scout troop out there has their own way of doing things. I would learn new skills from all the various troops.”

Troop Scouter at 1st Randburg Scouts Group, Garth Thompson, said the event will consist of about 40 000 Scouts from 150 countries. They will all get to interact with one another, learn how to deal with people from various walks of life and how to interact with them. “They come back as different people as the exposure they get is life-changing.”

Thompson said one of the main goals in the Scouting movement is to help mould good citizens by teaching them leadership skills, to help serve the community and to give back to the community and the environment. “This is all to make sure that when they grow up, they ask questions like what I can do for the community and not what they can get from the community.”

Linda Blackbeard, CEO of Randburg Chamber of Commerce is helping raise funds for the young man to go to the jamboree. She said it was important for them to get behind such an initiative as the chamber always has the community and its people in mind. “This is to show the dedication of the chamber towards the youth.

“We feel that Scouts is a worthwhile movement as it teaches children ethics, principles, hard work and discipline, which we feel is lacking in some areas of society today.”

She added that it was nice to see that youth in the community are striving for greatness and it was awesome to help assist them to achieve their goals through their own hard work. “Munguambe has made a huge effort and we like to see him attain his goals”
