Construction begins on new homes for disabled persons

BOSKRUIN – After nearly nine years of planning, the Ann Harding Cheshire Home finally broke ground with the construction work on 6 June.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home broke ground on the first development of 21 free-standing cluster style units.

Thanks to a generous donation at the end of last year, and after nearly nine years of planning, the home finally broke ground with the construction work on 6 June.

The units are designed to give those living with disabilities the opportunity to live in a private and well-equipped space, while still having the support and care that the home provides.

Chairperson of the Ann Harding Cheshire Home Lyndall Roman said, “Once this project has been completed, it will be the first of its kind in Africa. These will be independent living units with 24-hour assistance and care.”

Jackie Kyle of the home said, “This will bring the home closer to the international standard of encouraging independence in the disabled community.”

The units are being built off-plan, and will be sold on a ‘life rights basis’. Smaller units start at 122m squared, and consist of two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study.

Kyle added, “All units are wheelchair accessible. There’s also around the clock security, and double story units are available for those who require a caregiver to stay with them. Twenty-four hour care, catering and laundry services can be arranged.

“Our aim as a home is to offer those with disabilities unquestioning recognition of their human rights, high excellence from staff and volunteers, support from the organisation and caregivers, an opportunity to take part in the running of the home and promoting the love and care of others in similar situations.”

Stage two of the development will be a comprehensive skills development centre, and a step-down facility, which will begin once the home has managed to raise additional funding.
