One Small Act of Kindness helps keep the winter blues away

BLAIRGOWRIE – The charity group raised 216 blankets for the displaced.

On cold winter nights there is nothing better than snuggling next to the heater draped in your warmest blanket. For a few in our community this luxury is not one they get enjoy on cold nights.

This is why One Small Act of Kindness spreads a little warmth this winter as they distributed new blankets to those in our community who need them the most. The charity group assisted various displaced people in and around Blairgowrie with thick, new blankets which they handed out at their weekly soup kitchen. It was important for the group to do this initiative as they are cognisant of the fact that it is important to remember that not everyone is privileged as some in our community.

Kelly-Ann van der Meer from the charity organisation said they managed to collect 216 blankets, “Just in time for the real bitter winter.”

She said they aim to collect blankets every winter as some of the men are either robbed, looted or in need of a new one every year. “This year we had more help from the public than we did from companies, which was so amazing. People really do care about the people in their communities.”

To get the blankets they set up a BackaBuddy, a crowdfunding platform that is designed to help you create online campaigns to raise funds for various causes. Fellow member Sam Parrish said this made it easier for people to donate and seeing the interest was inspiring. She also said the response was amazing, “We had the 67 Blankets team with us too and everyone was so excited.”

For her, acts like these restore her faith and let the displaced people know they are noticed and cared for.

The acts of kindness do not just stop at Blairgowrie, they will spill over into Fourways and Sandton where more people will receive blankets.

To get involved, the community can visit the group’s Facebook page, for more information on which initiatives you can be part of. They are currently running a drive to collect money to buy more blankets to hand out in Fourways and Sandton. You can also drop off any blankets at 32 Olympic Road, Blairgowrie.
