Car guards speak out

LINDEN – Car guards in the Linden CBD are positive about working better with the police.

Car guards in the Linden CBD are positive about working better with the police, security companies and the payment company uKheshe.

Linden car guards were taken through a process of police clearance on 22 May and registered with uKheshe, a company that seeks to provide a simple solution to make payments to car guards easier.

John Khumalo has been a car guard in the Linden CBD for the past seven years. He said, “We work on tips, and sometimes life is a struggle because most people don’t tip us. We try to provide the best friendly service that we can, but when they come out of a restaurant, they don’t even pay you any attention. I often tell people that ‘I am here to look after your car’ and not after your money – if you want to help me with what little you have, you can.

Commenting on crime, Khumalo said, “We don’t like crime and we are only here to make the community safer, and we are passionate about our jobs. Some people act as if they are car guards, but they are actually there to commit crimes. We are the ones who often get blamed when a person like that commits a crime, as they think they are part of us.

“I really hope that this initiative can help. We have never used uKheshe before and it is very new, but we value anything positive like this. Hopefully, this system will make us a team, helping us to communicate better, assist the police, and keep the community safer.”
