Rand Park High takes to the stage for their annual major production

RANDPARK – Rand Park High School recently wrapped up their successful major production for the year and saw the students come together to celebrate the performing arts.

Rand Park High School presented its annual major production, Dance Rules, to sold-out audiences from 9 to 11 May.

Well-known for its outstanding on-stage productions which form part of the school’s performing arts programme, this year’s show was another outstanding success.

Learners auditioned for the production toward the end of last year and have worked tirelessly with the directorial team, band and backstage crew to perfect the production. A sneak preview was presented to 370 Grade 6 learners from local primary schools on the Monday preceding Thursday’s gala performance. This performance has become an important part of preparation for the final on-stage performances and the Grade 6s were an enthusiastic and supportive audience.

Based on the romantic comedy, Strictly Ballroom co-written by Baz Luhrmann, Dance Rules focuses on Scott Hastings (played by Grade 12 Daniel Appelman) who is a young ballroom dancer with the talent to become a ballroom champ. Scott has one small flaw – he likes to dance ‘his own steps’, something frowned upon by the ballroom dance community.

Scott is horrified when a beginner dancer, Fran (played by Grade 12 Kyla Swart), dares to suggest that she partner him when his regular dance partner drops him after being embarrassed by his non-conformist dance style. Scott changes his mind when he recognises a kindred spirit in Fran. Together they are determined to win the dance championships.

The school extended a special thanks to the Barnyard Theatre and to the Academy of Sound Engineering for their generous sponsorship of the production.
