Sewer system upgrade in Cosmo City

COSMO CITY – Proportional representation councillor, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, together with Joburg Water is set to improve South Africa Drive in Cosmo City.

According to Joburg Water, it is embarking on a sewer pipe upgrade and rehabilitation in Cosmo City Ext 2. The project is aimed at putting an end to a constant blockage that has been in existence for more than a year, and was both unsightly and posed a great health risk on the main road of the suburb.

“The contractor is already established on the site and the Joburg Water teams are constantly monitoring progress by ensuring that a jet truck flushes the line daily to alleviate pressure,” said Kayser-Echeozonjoku.

“The contractor is expected to complete the upgrade by October 2019 at a cost of R10 million. The project was initiated due to rampant complaints about a failing sewer network from the community of Cosmo City Ext 2 which led to the City of Johannesburg taking action. “These complaints were confirmed by Johannesburg Water operations [Randburg depot] as a serious concern requiring urgent intervention.”

Residents of Cosmo City are urged to join Johannesburg Water in taking care of the infrastructure by playing their part in ensuring that they do not flush any foreign objects into the system. Johannesburg Water has already started with educating the community on the dos and don’ts of using the sewer infrastructure.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku added that those who were not familiar with the road closure would be guided by the signs near the construction site.

“Most of the sewer smell which was affecting the general public is now reduced, also the roads are been cleaned regularly due to construction still taking place.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku concluded, “The coalition government has set aside a significant budget to upgrade the sewer line and improve road conditions in and around Cosmo City. As a pro-poor government, we firmly believe in the dignity of all residents and that adequate infrastructure forms a foundation for developing an open opportunity society.”
