‘Learning is lifelong’ says 74-year old new lawyer Premchand Huri

BLAIRGOWRIE – A 74-year old attorney Premchand Huri believes in lifelong learning and constantly serving your people.

Premchand Huri’s spectacles sat expectantly on the bridge of his nose in front of his laptop. The auburn brown wooden table was decorated with books and papers on an overcast morning in Blairgowrie.

His khaki shirt complements his polka-dot brown tie, which lies beneath a collar which seemingly stands to attention. Huri is here to talk about his latest achievement, qualifying as an attorney at the impressive age of 74.

“I spent the greater part of my life as a teacher, I studied all my life. I’ve got three previous degrees, plus a diploma and subsequent to that the LLB, so you can see it’s been an ongoing thing.”

The ongoing thirst and love for knowledge has been a recurring theme in the life of this teacher turned attorney after qualifying at 74. Pursuing a law degree in his seventies after a life dedicated to teaching was the next step for Huri who wanted to know more for his personal interest after retirement.

Having spent his younger years playing on the dusty railway barracks of Kwa-Zulu Natal he called home, Huri ‘was still determined to get where I want[ed]’to be’.

During his first year out of high school he worked in a law firm to fund his studies, and has come full circle as he finds himself as an attorney alongside friend turned family and colleague Darryl Morris. “I must have done something good in a past life,” Huri reflects while attributing his success to people who helped him along the way to his goals – his humility consistently shone through while sharing his antidotes for life.

Huri has two girls, a boy as well as four grandchildren. The retired science teacher emphasises that he views any person he has ever taught as one of his children and dedicates his success as an educator and member of various senior positions in education. “Life is to live. Make the most of what you have and be grateful for the blessings you have in life.”

Huri is in the process of writing a book which he hopes to release in a year or two from now on his life and family history.
