Community warrior passes away following illness

RANDBURG – Klarika Nettleton known for her big passion against animal cruelty has passed away.

Klarika Nettleton, known by those closest to her as Nomsa, has passed away, leaving a community in shock.

Klarika had been given the name Nomsa by the community for whom she spent her life rallying for, a name of which she was extremely proud of. The name refers to the kindness and compassion of its carrier, and Klarika never failed to strive to live up to the moniker.

Klarika was a regular at our Randburg Sun offices, always pushing to have her editorial featured – “The more I am featured, the more people will donate and the more I can help,” she would tell us on a near-weekly basis.

Her biggest passion in life was animals living in the informal settlements in and around the Randburg area. She fought against the mistreatment of animals ranging from chickens to dogs and spent her life rallying for donations to assist in making the lives of these animals more bearable.

She also cared for people, collecting old clothes and would spend hours walking through the informal settlements giving them to those most in need. Klarika gave absolutely everything of herself to her community, often going without herself, so she could pass it on to others – her presence will surely be missed.

Norman Dawe, the business manager for Caxton Local Media’s Joburg North branch, under which Randburg Sun falls, had the following to say about his dealings with Klarika:

“Having dealt with Klarika for many years the Randburg Sun is at a loss for words on the news of Klarika’s passing. Klarika can be summed up in one word, ‘passion’. She has for years been involved in looking after, educating and campaigning within the outlying areas of Randburg to better the conditions of people and animals.

“Klarika always pushed the Randburg Sun to talk about issues within the informal settlements and asked for assistance in collections from the greater community, this was done out of a will to do good and better the lives of everyone and her beloved animals. She has touched many hearts over the years. Klarika will be missed by the community in which she served for many years.”

The Randburg Sun is receiving many tributes to Klarika and will publish them as they become available.
