Thanks to the generous donation of Lego robotics equipment to the children of Ferndale High School, the school is now ready for a future of technological enlightenment.
Christopher Thompson of the Fourways Rotary Club, the group that helped to donate the equipment, said, “Last year, we helped in donating some Lego robotics equipment, and this year we donated six more robotics kits, enabling the school to enter robotics competitions around the country.”
The sophisticated equipment enables learners to learn vital programming and engineering skills while adding a fun extramural to the school’s curriculum.
Robotics club teacher Winnie Mudzingwa said, “We need to gear our children for the future and this is the best way to do it. They learn to build these robots from scratch and they learn to help the robots perform tasks.”
The Rotary Club also donated new robotics desks with maps and patterns to help the robots perform their functions.
“We have beginners who have started in the robotics club this year, and some who are at a higher level ready to enter competitions this year,” added Mudzingwa.
Thabang Legadima, an alumnus of Ferndale High School, works for the Lego Foundation’s Care for Education and comes to the school on a weekly basis to help the robotics club learners.
“I enjoy what I do, and I love helping the learners to build their robots and deal with the challenges in their operation,” said Legadima.
