Road safety awareness campaign kicks-off at Randburg Taxi Rank

RANDBURG – Road safety campaign reminds taxi drivers and pedestrians that they are important.

RANDBURG – The non-profit organisation IM Possible kicked off their road safety awareness campaign at the Randburg Taxi Rank on 12 March.

With school holidays, public holidays and the Easter weekend around the corner, the NPO saw this as the perfect opportunity to launch their Y’r Important road safety campaign to raise awareness with those who will be travelling on the busy roads, and their drivers.

Y’r Important reminds both drivers, passengers and pedestrians that they are all important and that by working together to increase awareness, the rate of injuries and deaths on the roads can be curbed.

The NPO’s CEO Ndumiso Nkosi said, “The taxi industry transports thousands of people every day, not only locally, but to destinations across the country. With such a high death rate on our roads, it is important that people that play such an important role in transportation and pedestrians are aware of the dangers on our roads.”

“The public has the mentality that taxi drivers are only dangerous, but they need to be acknowledged for the good work they do and the massive task they have transporting our nation. They share common concerns with us.

“These drivers sometimes work over 15 hours a day, so fatigue and stress levels are high amongst them. We hope to help them by giving them comforting information, and in that way, we can help to change their behaviour on the road.”

The NPO introduced the public to their colourful mascots, the Peddy family. “Peddy stands for pedestrians as well as the pedals drivers use. We recently shot a TV show for children that stars the Peddy family and focuses on road safety awareness.”

The mascots and other volunteers moved around the rank distributing information booklets and stickers encouraging drivers and passengers to remain safe during the busy transportation times.
