Quick alert leads to hijacker arrest

BORDEAUX – One suspected hijacker is in custody after a hijacking took place on Bram Fischer Drive on 26 February.

BORDEAUX – A 34-year-old hijacking suspect is in custody after police quickly arrested him when a robbery occurred on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Dover Street on 26 February.

According to Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja, the victim was in his stationary car at the robots of the busy Randburg intersection during peak hour traffic when three suspects pounced on him.

Maja said, “The victim alleged that his sunroof and windows were open when the trio approached him demanding his belongings. One of the suspects threatened him with an unknown object from the waist and he handed over his items.”

The victim noticed that Metro police officers were in the vicinity and approached them.

“He further pointed out the suspects to the officers before they could disappear. The officers managed to arrest one suspect and upon searching the suspect, they recovered the items allegedly belonging to the victim,” said Maja.

While the other suspects remain at large, the arrested suspect was detained in police custody until he appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court to face charges of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, and possession of suspected stolen items on the 28 February. The suspect was remanded in custody for further investigation.

Maja added, “The management of this station would like to thank the officers for their wonderful work in rooting out criminal elements in our society more especially in the intersections during peak hours.

“Robberies at intersections during peak hours are of major concern, so we plead with our community/motorists to make sure that their windows are closed all the time during those times. Make sure that all valuables are secured in private places and that you are not using your cell phone while driving. Let’s be observant at all times and we further encourage other motorists to call the police when they witness such incidents.”
