Playing it forward

FERNDALE – The Fourways Rotary Club's donation of Lego to Ferndale High School learners encourages them to give back to others.

FERNDALE – The Fourways Rotary Club gave a generous donation of Lego sets to the Grade 8 and 9 learners of Ferndale High School on 11 March.

Over a hundred eager learners filled the school hall in anticipation of receiving their educational gifts.

Christopher Thompson of the Fourways Rotary Club said, “Our club has been involved with this school for quite some time, and we try to make a difference in our community, especially with those that struggle sometimes.”

The club donated the Lego sets in a unique way that replicates the ‘pay it forward model’.

Thompson added, “We like to encourage people to have the feeling of giving back to others, and what it is like to have the pleasure of giving something away. So we decided that instead of giving the children one set of Lego, we would give them two so that they can give one away to someone they care about.”

Thompson suggested that the idea behind this is that it should encourage others to do the same.

“Looking after the youth is something highly important to us. At Rotary, we are always giving things to others who need them, and we get a lot of pleasure from that,” Thompson said.

The club has a strong relationship with the Lego Organisation, who according to Thompson, donated the sets after overproduction of toys recently.

“They trust people like Rotary to donate the toys in a charitable way, and not use them for profit,” said Thompson.
