Shave it, colour it or donate

RANDPARK RIDGE – The Randridge Mall came together and supported the cancer cause.

RANDPARK RIDGE – Adults and children from all over Joburg North came to support the Shavathon at the Randridge Mall Shopping Centre on 2 March.

Supporters could have their hair shaved or sprayed or make a donation. There was also a blood drive for those willing to give blood for a good cause.

Men and women with long luxurious hair took a brave step and sat down, patiently waiting for their hair to be cut. One of the volunteers, Shani Conrad sat down and had her ponytail snipped off. “It felt like a weight being cut off. My hair can grow, others can’t, so it really wasn’t a problem cutting it off at all.”

Hot91.9 FM also attended the event and Mark Pilgrim, radio and TV personality cut off supporter, Rachel Longster’s ponytail for the cancer cause.

Landi van Deventer, head of marketing at the Randridge Mall said, “The Shavathon at the centre is about bringing the community together and giving back. This is an opportunity for everyone in the centre and the community to stand together and support the cancer cause. I would not have been able to do this without the tenants.”

Lucy Balona spokesperson and head of marketing for Cansa said, “Today is all about showing support for cancer survivors. One of the things that the money is going to, is for the cancer kids homes. We also use the income for cancer screening as well as counselling and support.”

The day was spent with cheers each time a supporter cut off their hair. Most of the supporters wrote down names of loved ones that lost the fight against cancer or who are still fighting it while cutting, shaving or spraying their hair for them. It was a very emotional experience for some of the community members.
