Meet head of ‘Flash’ department

SANDTON – Meet the man behind the firearm license department at Randburg SAPS.

Captain Ian du Plessis heads up the ‘Flash’ department at Randburg Police Station, he is the man you meet for firearms, liquor and second-hand goods.

Don’t be deterred, the team does not run around flashing people, they are responsible for the exchange of firearms, applications, and renewals for firearms. Although the Gauteng Liquor Broad issues liquor licenses, it is this department’s job to enforce compliance. They run regular inspections at multiple outlets such as shebeens, taverns and restaurants to make sure that they are closed and that no alcohol is served after 2am as stated in the City of Johannesburg by-laws.

“We tend to have a problem within the Randburg CBD, although there may be illegal operations throughout our precinct. We encourage the community to be vigilant for liquor outlets that may be suspicious. You must inform us,” said Du Plessis.

Noise pollution is also covered by the department. He explained that noise levels can be a criminal offence if it disturbs the peace.

“We work with the JMPD noise-control team who measure the sound levels. Warnings are issued and if they do not comply and a criminal docket is opened. The sound equipment is seized and the courts then take over.”

Second-hand officers make sure that any business operating in second-hand goods comply with their respective license.
