Tendani Matodzi wins big at national police awards

HONEYDEW – Honeydew Police Station's Tendani Matodzi was recognised for his achievements.

HONEYDEW – Honeydew Police Station’s Tendani Matodzi has been recognised for his achievements by winning an award at the police’s Annual National Excellence Awards in White River on 25 January.

“Each year we have the national commissioner’s excellence awards, and Tendani was selected to represent Gauteng at the awards,” spokesperson for the station Captain Balan Muthan said.

Matodzi works at the Honeydew police and the Johannesburg West Cluster police stations as an artisan, who is involved in the day-to-day maintenance of the stations and their vehicles in the area. Matodzi travels and is constantly on standby for his work.

The National Excellence Awards recognises officers and station workers for the exceptional work they do, often under extreme circumstances.

Matodzi recalls an incident where he, unfortunately, fell victim to a stray bullet while on duty early last year. “In the late night, I received a call from the commander about an emergency, a broken gun safe near Diepsloot, that I had to help with. When I arrived, other police members opened fire on suspects and a stray bullet ricocheted into my leg. I still have a few problems with my leg, but I am getting used to it now.”

The provincial excellence awards are where individuals within Gauteng are awarded for certain achievements. From there, they head to the National Excellence Awards where they compete against other high achieving individuals in the whole country.

Matodzi is part of a group of 22 artisans that work for the police in Gauteng. He said, “I am the only person in the whole cluster who is responsible for this kind of work, but I am so dedicated and thankful for my job.”
