Ward councillors petition for safety

FERNDALE – Local Ward councillors are petitioning to close a dangerous part of a road.

FERNDALE – Ward councillors David Potter and Mike Wood encourage local residents to sign a petition to initiate the closure of a dangerous meridian section of Hill Street.

“The corner of Hill Street and Fern Avenue have been known for many minor and major accidents over the years. The Johannesburg Roads Agency, at our request, has been engaged with and visited the site. Increased signage has been installed, in the form of pole signs and road markings, but road users continue to disregard the signs and markings, making illegal left turns out of Fern Avenue, a one way in off Hill Street, into Hill Street or even worse, crossing the Hill Street median island, meant only for entrance into Fern Avenue across Hill Street travelling towards the Randburg CBD.”

Potter suggested that law enforcement on this section of road by the JMPD will, unfortunately, be irregular due to their constrained resources and multiple hotspots in the wards and region.

“An engineering solution is the only option to increase the safety of Hill Street,” Potter said.

The ward councillors wish to have their petition served to the City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Roads Agency on 15 March for their consideration of closing off the median island of Hill Street corner Fern Avenue.

Potter also highlighted other points relating to the problem:

  • Hill Street is a main arterial road, with cars travelling at speed. Speed calming is not an option.
  • The JMPD has been requested to do manual speed enforcement.
  • Hill Street is steep coming from the Randburg CBD, around a sharp turn. Before you get to Fern Avenue is where the accidents happen.
  • Hill Street is steep coming from Malibongwe Drive
  • Potter continued, “We encourage residents to sign the petition by 14 March 2019 in the interest of road safety at this intersection in Ferndale.”
