Man sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for Ferndale business robbery

FERNDALE – The management of Randburg Police Station welcomed the sentencing and said it would be a deterrence to would-be criminals.


FERNDALE – A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment in the Johannesburg North regional court for business robbery.

On the 20 January 2017 at about 7pm, the victim was approached by the suspect while he was busy working in his office situated on the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Hill Street in Ferndale. The accused pointed a firearm at him and demanded money.

Captain Makgowanyana Maja of the Randburg Police Station said the accused ordered the victim to fill a bag belonging to the complainant with money from the tills and was then ordered to sit down with other employees.

The accused then left the scene.

Two police officers, Constable Mthembeni Bhengu and Constable Charles Sebashe were nearby on patrol. A member of the public notified the two officers about the crime which was in progress. They rushed to the scene and came across the accused as he was making his way out with the bag of money. The officers ordered him to stop but he fled. They gave chase and he was caught and the stolen cash and unlicensed firearm were recovered.

The case was assigned to trio task team member Detective Constable Glen Mdaka.
