RANDPARK – Rand Park High School hosted a stellar swimming gala, which saw a number of school records broken.
Some of the records stood for up to 20 years, and have only recently been smashed by a lucrative team of young swimmers.
The school’s dean of sport and deputy principal, Reynier Coertzen said, “These records have set the tone for an exciting swimming season at our school.”
Eight existing records were broken by swimmers at the inter-house swimming gala, which traditionally marks the beginning of the school year. The school’s Bishop House won the gala and Martin House won the Spirit Trophy.
Scott Cloete joined the school in Grade 8 this year and broke two records. Aaryn Davis-Hannibal broke two records. Jenna Curtis, Bernard Wolfaardt and Tristan Whitehead broke one record each. Nicholas Stevens broke the 1999 record in Boys’ Open Freestyle.
Other top awards were presented to:
- Junior victor ludorum – Scott Cloete in Grade 8.
- Junior victrix ludorum – Mañana Du Toit in Grade 9.
- Senior victor ludorum – Bernard Wolfaardt in Grade 11.
- Senior victrix ludorum – Teagan José in Grade 10.
Coertzen congratulated all the swimmers and supporters on participating in the gala and particularly on the records broken, saying, “We are very excited to welcome our new Grade 8s to the swimming team. Having a total of eight records broken at this year’s gala made this event extraordinary and very exciting. We look forward to the swimming season.”
