School career starts with the lighting of a candle

RANDPARK RIDGE – Rand Park High held their traditional ceremony to welcome new learners.

RANDPARK RIDGE – Parents and Grade 8 learners at Rand Park High School took part in a candle-lighting ceremony as part of the learners’ inauguration and welcoming to the school.

Each candle that was lit at the ceremony symbolised and illustrated the beginning of each learner’s high school career. The event was part of a week-long orientation for the new learners.

The Grade 12 leaders and the grade tutors guided and orientated the Grade 8s as they familiarised themselves with the school’s academic programme and extra-curricular activities. The programme consisted of games, school tours, war-cries, a swimming gala, meeting the educators and making new friends. The Grade 8s also presented a war-cry song to their parents that had been written by the leaders.

“This event is one that is remembered by our learners and their families. It has become a popular tradition within Rand Park High School,” said Alan Wilke, principal of Rand Park High School.

“We are very pleased to welcome the Grade 8s and their families. We wish them much success during their high school years with us.”
