Suspected hijackers arrested near hotspot

RANDBURG – Knives and a toy gun were used in a Republic Road hijacking.

RANDBURG – Three suspects have been arrested in a hijacking hotspot area after allegedly committing a robbery on 15 January.

In the late afternoon, Randburg police officers received a complaint of an alleged robbery in progress on the corner of William Nicol Drive and Republic Road.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said, “The officers received the description of the suspects on their way to the scene, including the taxi the suspects climbed into to get away. They were spotted inside the taxi, which was travelling towards Wagon Street in Hurlingham.”

The taxi was stopped by the police officers and suspects were identified. When searched, the suspects were found in possession of a toy gun, knives and cell phone suspected to be stolen during the robbery.

The suspects were arrested and appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on 18 January to face charges of armed robbery, possession of dangerous weapons, and possession of suspected stolen property. The suspects were remanded in custody pending a later date.

Maja added, “The management of three police stations including Randburg, Linden and Sandton have welcomed the recent arrest of three suspects who have been terrorising our community at the intersections more especially on their boundaries for some time now.”

The investigation into the matter continues.
