RANDBURG – Mayor Herman Mashaba has brought the issue of illegal immigration to the Minister of Home Affairs, Siyabonga Cwele’s attention on 17 January.

“We have a lot of undocumented people, with fake identification documents, fake passports and so forth in Johannesburg. This meeting with the Minister of Home Affairs gave us the opportunity to discuss our frustrations as the City of Johannesburg on how Home Affairs is treating these illegal immigrants in our City,” said Mayor Mashaba.

After Mashaba brought this major concern to the minster’s attention, Cwele said, “The Mayor has raised an issue with me regarding illegal immigrants. We have agreed to have a full meeting to address this issue, it’s not just in Johannesburg – it’s everywhere. The policy of the South Africa government is that we accept and welcome everyone who comes to South Africa legally, but we will not tolerate those we break our laws and come illegally.

“We are urging all those who have come illegally to please come forward. It’s dangerous for people to come into the country illegally – it can cause a lot of tension and security issues in our country. We have also agreed to work with law enforcement agencies to deal with this matter.”
