Youngsters with their guardian angels – WAS

JUKSKEI PARK – The Was Foundation, still loyal to its cause.

We’re Against Starvation Foundation (Was Foundation) is an organisation that looks after about 1 200 destitute people in Johannesburg.

They distribute clothes, food parcels, daily meals and when possible they assist with medical care but their main emphasis is on assisting the youngsters and the elderly.

They recently opened their first children’s shelter, Rainbow Haven, in Krugersdorp.

They are using it as a base to feed 50 youngsters who can collect lunch boxes in the morning and later, the evening, they can return and enjoy another meal while working on their homework until their parents fetch them.

On board, they have a dedicated counsellor who assists with abused women and children.

Esmarelda van Zyl, the founder of Was Foundation said, “Upon opening Rainbow Haven, the support from the public has been incredible and while the needs are ongoing, there are now fewer hungry tummies.”

One of the highlights for them this passing year was that one of the boys whose family they helped was named head boy of his high school.

Van Zyl said, “Unfortunately our lowlights are more than our highlights this year.”

She elaborated that a 12-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and that they received almost no support from the authorities. Her all-time low was that a six-month-old baby boy died in one of the camps last year after an asthma attack.

“It is often the people who have the least who give the most and they are all heroes to us!” said, Van Zyl.

The Was Foundation is in need of non-perishable foods, nappies, formula and clothes for all ages and sizes.

They also need toiletries to stop the youngsters from being teased at school for smelling bad. They would also value some treats or anything that can possibly light up the little faces.

Another challenge of theirs is helping people find employment. Van Zyl said they are often overlooked because of their circumstances.

“My hope is that Rainbow Haven will continue to grow in strength and that we can continue to play a role in keeping people, particularly children, safe.”
