Fourways to host World’s 835th Street Store event

FONTAINEBLEAU – Doorway to Dignity will join BeBold Digital and the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre to host the charitable event.

It will be World Street Store Day on 9 December and Doorway to Dignity joins BeBold Digital and the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre for the unique day.

This will be the centre’s second Street Store event and the world’s 835th. It will take place from 11am to 3pm at the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre, 105 William Nicol Drive, Fourways.

The World’s 835th Street Store Event will be held in Fourways.

People from around the globe are encouraged to host a Street Store event. This is the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, free pop-up clothing store for the homeless, located on the street and stocked by donations.

It’s concept originated in Cape Town in 2014 as an initiative between M&C Saatchi Abel and The Haven Night Shelter.

Since then, it has become a worldwide phenomenon.

The Fontainebleau based, Doorway to Dignity aims to partner with like-minded organisations to address the plight of people who have lost their homes and livelihoods, by restoring their dignity and renewing their hope.

Anyone can host a Street Store by registering on the Street Store’s official website, said Prasenjit Sinha, director of BeBold Digital. “Teams pledge to host Street Stores and motivate their communities to donate clothes,” said Sinha.

“Already we have received generous donations of shoes and clothing for this year’s event. We encourage the community to spread the message, donate clothes or visit the Street Store on the day to witness change.”

Trevor Webster, CEO of Doorway to Dignity, said people who could not afford to buy clothing often have to rely on handouts which may not necessarily be of their choosing.

“The purpose of the Street Store is to give displaced and destitute people an opportunity to select clothing they actually like, at no cost to themselves, and in a way that preserves their dignity,” he said.
