Cellphone snatcher off the streets

RANDBURG – Focusing on a crime hotspot led to the arrest of one individual.

A suspect has been arrested after behaving suspiciously at a Randburg robbery and hijacking hotspot.

On the evening of 22 November, an officer at the Linden Police Station received a call from a member of the community about a vehicle parked at the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Republic Road.

With the area being a strong focus for the police as a hotspot for robberies, the officer mobilised officers and sought assistance from the neighbouring Randburg Police Station.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said, “His call was responded to and all members rushed to the scene and cornered the vehicle described to them.

“The vehicle was searched and its driver was found in possession of the latest cellphone that allegedly was robbed from a victim.”

The 30-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 26 November to face charges of possession of stolen property.
