Bordeaux South Park makes its community great

BORDEAUX SOUTH – The park was upgraded through the efforts of a dedicated residents' association and a community willing to do their part.

Imagine living in a neighbourhood where the local park is so well maintained and safe that families picnic during the week and the sweet laughter of children can be heard from metres away.

For the residents of Bordeaux South, this is not just some grand aspiration, it’s a way of life.

Found nestling in their community is Bordeaux South Park, a park the Bordeaux South Residents Association (BSRA) has managed to maintain and keep safe with the help of their community who ensure they keep it clean.

Children can ride their bikes or play on the seesaw at Bordeaux South Park.

The association’s chairperson, Elinor Bodinger said to make sure the park is always kept to standard, they rely on the grass- cutting schedule provided by City Parks and at times, they would bring in their own grass-cutting service.

“City Parks supports us with the maintenance of the current play equipment,” said Bodinger.

They do face some challenges, of course, and Bodinger said one of the challenges is keeping the grass in top quality condition and always cut when their limited budget allows.

Outside visitors are a challenge as some do not abide by the by-laws, consume alcoholic beverages and host braais.

Colourful tyres, perfectly positioned for children to partake in hurdles.

Various playsets for children are there for them to enjoy.

“This is a children’s park and alcohol should not be consumed there and littering is also a problem. Visitors should make use of the bins provided and dispose of their litter responsibly.” The park is said to be used by local residents and those from neighbouring suburbs.

“Nannies bring the children during the day, parents come through all day and in the afternoon.

The parks get very busy at the weekend, and at night the park is fully lit with bright lights and the entire community is patrolled by two private security companies. Residents of the suburb also constantly report suspicious persons/activities and reaction cars are dispatched,” said Bodinger.

Bodinger explained that the BSRA has over the years raised R350 000 to expand the park from the initial build done by City Parks.

“The strength of a strong community and contribution to a monthly levy by over 70 per cent of the residents of Bordeaux has enabled us to expand this park and transform it into one of the most fun parks for kids.”

She added they are proud to have so many supporters and contributors and she urges the remainder of residents to come on board and contribute to the residents’ association so that bigger and better projects can be created.

She also said Bordeaux South has turned into a desirable suburb for families due to the park, which will be transformed even more in the coming year.

They will host a Carols Evening in the park on 8 December and have challenged Mayor Herman Mashaba to join them as their Father Christmas, in recognition of their contribution to the park.

Bordeaux South Park is one enjoyed my many community members.

Fun elements such as ‘traffic lights’ have been added to the park to engage children.

Ward 102 Councillor, David Potter said the work undertaken by the committee of the BSRA under the leadership of Bodinger is to be commended.

“The Bordeaux South Park has transformed over the years with this latest upgrade adding to the community spirit of the park.”

Adding the ward is richer thanks to residents and communities who take ownership and invest where the City cannot fully invest, due to budget constraints, for the benefit of all.
