VOX POP: Why is Movember so important?

RANDPARK – We spoke to community members to get their opinions on the awareness event.

November is also Movember, and is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.

The Randburg Sun spoke to the guests of The Fairway Hotel’s Movember event on 1 November to find out their opinions on this cause and why they supported it.

JAMES NOBLE: Movember is a great way to promote cancer awareness among men. I keep my beard the whole year round, but grow it just a little bit more to show support.
NATASHIA MARE: There is very often a big focus on ladies with cancer awareness… Movember serves to let men know that they too have people who are concerned about them.
BRENDAN VOGT: October is a month focused on breast cancer awareness, and it is followed in November with a focus on male related cancers such as prostate and testicular cancers. It is so great to be raising awareness about all forms of cancer.
PATRICIA VERVEY: Not enough attention is paid to this kind of awareness. Men very often keep quiet about it or are too afraid to get themselves checked. People know about Movember, but more people need to join in to raise more awareness.
DANIELLE VAN DER MERWE: Movember helps men to think outside the box and realise cancer can affect everyone. It raises awareness and helps to motivate men to get themselves tested for not only cancer, but a variety of medical problems.
EITENNE VENTER: I am wearing this fabulous moustache in support of Movember. I feel that it is an important cause as it helps to promote awareness about cancer in men, and helps people to talk about it.
