Malanshof resident takes poetic license

MALANSHOF – Local poet, Green Krynauw expounds on her passion for poetry and how her love for prose is never-ending.

Local published poet, Green Krynauw shares her passion for poetry and talks about the road that led to her having a book of poems published.

Krynauw said that when she was younger, although she quite enjoyed scrapbooking, it was her encounter with poetry through a class project that would not only have her recite a poem in front of her class but also ignite a passion within her for the art form. She kept on writing all through high school until she fell pregnant at 19 with her daughter. As a single mother, she did not have enough time to write but with the support and belief from friends and family around her, it was only inevitable that she would accomplish something great. This support would see her manage to have her first book of poems self-published.

Her poems cover everything from heartache, to love, and they speak of how she felt at that particular time. Some are even dedicated to specific people in her life. Though her poems reflect where she was at a certain time, she firmly believes that they are all relatable.

She explained that her creative process is not always easy. Sometimes she gets an idea and quickly jots it down and other times they take longer because like every artist, the perfection of their craft is very important to them. “I always think, have I done the right thing, should I maybe change this around,” she said.

Green Krynauw reads an excerpt from her book of poems.

Krynauw also listens to music by musicians like Sia to aid her creative process. She tries to not read other poets’ work as she does not want her work to mimic anyone else. She has one self-published book, through green’s eyes, and she is preparing to have her second published and out for the public to enjoy by February next year which she hopes to have published through a publishing house. Krynauw is currently halfway through the book which is mainly prose poetry. “I love writing and have always enjoyed putting my emotions out on paper which eventually turned into poetry.”

She said she writes better when she is sad as she is more of a dark emotional poet. Krynauw also believes she is a better writer than she was some years ago. She said that the challenges she has had to overcome, have helped make her into a better writer.

The passionate poet has an attachment to short poems that are to the point. Her favourite poem is E.E. Cummings’ I carry you in my heart.

Although it is very hard to get published, she is focused and determined to see her dreams come true. She encourages all young poets out there to continue with their passion and never let it die out.
