Eight suspects who were arrested on 19 October in connection with a Metro police jobs scam have appeared in court.
Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said it was alleged that the suspects paid close to R50 000 in exchange for jobs to a certain individual and his accomplice. Both were arrested.
“The suspects reported for duty at the JMPD offices in Martindale and produced fraudulent JMPD officers’ appointment certificates and fraudulent medical certificates,” he said.
The City of Johannesburg’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service was called to interview the suspects, the mayor added, and they confirmed that the certificates were obtained illegally and the suspects were arrested on the spot.
“It is unclear at this stage how long this sort of scam has been going on for.
“Corruption has no place in this administration.
The prevalence of employment scams is even more concerning as residents of this city who are seeking work have become easy prey for criminals.”
