Golden Harvest Park Parkrun does not stop for breaks
GOLDEN HARVEST PARK – Thousands still run the Parkrun at Golden Harvest Park every week.
It has been over three years and Golden Harvest Park still hosts about 1 000 runners every Saturday for its Parkrun.
Parkruns are free 5km run/walk events held at parks around the world every Saturday at 8am.
They are known for their social and non-competitive atmosphere, where runners can improve their personal fitness with their families, friends and dogs in a picturesque setting.
Golden Harvest Park became the 61st park in South Africa to host Parkruns when it was opened in August 2015 by nine-times Comrades Marathon winner, Bruce Fordyce and local organisers.
The event has grown from the 426 runners who attended the first run and event director, Stephen Streetman says it is still growing.
“Our record was 1 560 runners in one Saturday in January this year,” he said. “The appeal in Parkrun is, there is a community. No matter what stage of fitness you are in there will always be someone to run or walk with you,” said Streetman.
He said despite Golden Harvest Park’s hilly terrain in places, there are always parents pushing their babies in prams, and there are roughly 85 dogs at Parkruns each week.
Furthermore, dogs should be on leads during the run, and one dog is allowed per person for safety.
“The idea is to get people out of a sedentary lifestyle.”
He said there is no better place to run or walk than at Golden Harvest Park Parkrun, where there are also volunteers stationed throughout the route to ensure everyone’s safety and to make sure that no one gets lost.
