Smash-and-grabber arrested by police in unmarked car

RANDBURG – A smash-and-grab perpetrator was arrested by the Randburg police after officers spotted him robbing a victim.

A 29-year-old suspect was arrested by the Randburg police on charges of attempted robbery after a smash-and-grab incident on 2 October.

In the early evening, his victim was driving on Main Street towards Peter Place Street in Bryanston.

“The victim alleged that as he was approaching the traffic lights and driving slowly in the traffic, he was approached by a suspect who forced his hand inside his vehicle through an open window,” said Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja.

Before the suspect managed to grab anything from the vehicle, the victim drove forward to try and escape.

In the mirror, the victim noticed what he thought was a second suspect approaching him.

“Through operations that the police are conducting daily on identified hotspots around the policing precinct, the victim was not aware that the vehicle driving behind him was police officers.

As they had witnessed what was happening, they jumped out of their vehicle and gave chase after the suspect noticed them.”

The officers managed to arrest one of the suspects.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect is on parole. The possibility of an additional charge of violation of parole provisions might be added.”

Investigations continue and the suspect is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court to face charges of attempted robbery.
