Pedestrian killed by truck tyre on N1 highway

RANDPARK – Walking in the emergency lane of the busy N1 highway lead to the death of a pedestrian after he was hit by a stray tire.

A pedestrian was killed in a freak accident when he was hit by a stray truck tyre at high speed on the busy N1 highway on 28 September.

The man was walking near the N1 southbound heading toward Roodepoort between the Malibongwe and Beyers Naude drives off-ramps when the incident occurred.

Metro police arrived on the scene and alerted ER24 paramedics shortly after 12.30pm.

On arrival, paramedics found the body of the man believed to be in his 30s, lying in the emergency lane of the highway.

A truck tyre was found approximately 150 metres away.

ER24’s Russel Meiring said, “It is understood that the wheel had come off a truck, travelled a short distance and struck the man while he had been walking in the emergency lane.”

Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had already succumbed to his numerous injuries and was declared dead.

According to Meiring, police were on the scene for further investigation.
