Reddy family devastated after case is withdrawn

RANDBURG – The Reddy family received word last week that the court case has been withdrawn.

The Reddy family has been left reeling after the state withdrew the case on 28 September against the driver of the vehicle that collided with Caleb Reddy’s vehicle, which resulted in his death.

After various postponements since the commencement of the court proceedings, final arguments in the case were due to be heard in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 3 October.

However, family member Sarally Subbiah received word from the state prosecutor about the case being withdrawn late last week.

“The way that I understand it, the case has been thrown out of court and no further action will be taken… We are absolutely devastated, Caleb’s life is gone and this person gets to walk away freely,” said Subbiah.

Subbiah suggested that the case was withdrawn to the lack of availability of witnesses.

Reddy was killed in a vehicle collision on 26 December last year by an alleged drunk driver.

The foreign driver, Samuel Ayeobasan, who collided with Caleb was charged with drunk driving, culpable homicide and reckless endangerment.

The passenger who was in the accused’s vehicle passed away in March after being in a coma due to his injuries.

Subbiah continued, “For all the other families out there that are going through the same thing and do not have a voice, I deeply worry about our justice system.”

According to Subbiah, the family intends to continue to fight the case against the accused and has contacted the National Prosecuting Authority for further investigation.

The Randburg Sun is awaiting comment from the state prosecutor in the case and is awaiting further information on what will happen to the accused.
