Over 1 500 hip-hop dancers of all styles and ages descended onto the stage of the Walter Sisulu Hall in Randburg for the Global Dance Supreme Africa Dance Championship.
The event took place over four days, starting with qualifiers for South African Championship on 13 September, with the Inter-Continental Dance Championship grand finale for the top crews taking place on 16 September.
Global Dance Supreme is an event that sets out to give young talented individuals the opportunity to be part of a global dance community.
Crews from over 15 countries competed for winning titles. Popping, breaking, krump, Afro-styles and an open category were the styles of dance that crews compete in.
Event organiser Deon van der Merwe said, “The event was a culmination of a year’s hard work.
The competition aims to inspire people to bring hip-hop and its culture back to Africa, and there is a definite desire to have events like this in our own country and make them as popular as they are overseas.
“This is our inaugural event and we hope by 2020 we will have at least 30 countries taking part.”
DJ Eazy, Dj Ready D and Haylo provided the best beats for all the dancers.
Dancers had the opportunity to take home R130 000 in prize money if they won the top spot.
