#CrimeStats: Honeydew police confident as cases reported drop significantly

HONEYDEW – Although Honeydew police has been ranked in the top 5 national stations with the most reported crimes, they have seen a significant decline in various crimes.

Honeydew Police Station has ranked fourth on the national list of the top 30 stations with most crimes reported between April last year and March this year.

Police Minister Bheki Cele together with National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole released the 2017/2018 crime statistics on Tuesday.

Though ranked in the top five, the Honeydew police has seen a significant decline in various crimes between the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 period

Murder:
The latest figures reveal a 26.9 per cent decline from 67 murders reported to the current figure of 49.

Sexual offences:
From 175 cases in 2016/2017, only 154 were reported in the past year, showing a slight decline of 12.0 per cent.

Attempted murder:
The difference between cases reported in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 was only three cases. The number of cases reported went down from 77 to 74.

Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm:
In this category, numbers went down by 4,4 per cent numbers dropping from 656 to 627 cases reported.

Common assault:
A decline of 3,6 per cent saw numbers drop from 835 to 830.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances:
Compared to the previous year, numbers dropped from 1 183 to 1 076 a decline of 14 per cent.

Honeydew police spokesman Captain Balan Muthan attributes the significant declines to numerous crime prevention operations conducted within this period.

He said intervention by the cluster also assisted in their cause.

“More members are now working outside the office.”

“An increase in manpower and patrols is the reason for the drop in numbers.”
