St Stithians Boys’ College hosted the Wits Siyanqoba Maths Olympiad Training Centre teams for the South African Mathematics Team Competition on 9 and 11 September.
The school hosted the 16 teams from the centre, comprised of various schools, in a maths competition that targets learners from Grade 6 to matric, right through to undergraduate university students.
St Stithians commented that they are proud of their participants made up of both girls and boys in mixed teams.
The senior teams placed 5th, 7th and 8th in the top 10 out of 54 teams countrywide, with Tim Basson and Bradley Hultzer in the A team, Jason Brown and Jordan Homann in the B Team and Jessica James, Matthew Beresford and Muhammad Moola in the C Team.
The junior A team defended their title in the competition by beating the Western Cape teams by 52 points.
The Junior A team came first with a team score of 1 823 out of 2 000.
Tyrone Kasi competed with the A team and Nicholas Homann in the B team.
The aim of the Wits Siyanqoba Maths Olympiad Training Centre is to develop mathematical talent and assist young people to develop their full potential in the subject; and promote careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The maths competitions will continue over the next few weeks, with the next event held called Tour De Maths at Redhill.
