City Power warns of fraudsters using fake ID cards to rob residents

JOBURG – Technicians or contractors, City Power said, who are most likely to request access to properties are meter readers, cut-off teams or meter maintenance teams.

City Power has become aware of a scam and is warning residents to be on the alert for imposters and fraudsters who try to rob them by producing fake IDs, claiming to be City Power employees.

The entity said residents should not allow any person, technician or contractor into their property without first verifying their credentials with City Power.

Residents can ask employees to produce their ID card and the job card with the work order number for the work they are claiming to do.

Technicians or contractors, City Power said, who are most likely to request access to properties, are meter readers, cut-off teams or meter maintenance teams.

To report any suspicious individuals or vehicles, please contact City Power on 0860 562 874 or the risk control unit on 011 490 7911/00.

City Power releases this warning every now and again. There has been no talk of changing the identification process so residents are urged to remain vigilant – rather be safe than sorry.
