A clean-up for Ferndale Spruit

FERNDALE – Local residents are encouraged to join the Bryanfern Residents Association as they take a hike in nature and clean the environment at the same time.

The Bryanfern Residents Association will be hosting a clean-up along the Ferndale Spruit to coincide with Mayor Herman Mashaba’s city-wide A Re Sebetseng monthly clean-up initiative.

On Saturday, 1 September, the residents’ association is hosting a Spring Day brunch and picnic at the braai area in the park behind the Scout Hall on Eton Road, with parking available at the Scout Hall.

The Bryanfern Residents Association and community members stand with 22 bags collected during their clean-up on 18 August.

At their last event on 18 August, the enthusiastic group of residents cleaned up the spruit, collecting 22 bags of litter, leaving the area clear with its natural appeal restored.

A Bryanfern Residents Association member, John Enders said, “In addition to the vast urban forest that is about to turn green as it greets the arrival of spring in the next few weeks, Johannesburg is fortunate to have a number of beautiful streams and rivers flowing through it.

“One of these streams is the Ferndale Spruit, a tributary of the Klein Jukskei, which flows through the suburbs of Ferndale and Bryanston West.

Eirini Kalimeri fills her bag with litter during the clean-up initiative on 18 August.

It is a hidden jewel in the middle of the neighbourhood, and as the Bryanfern Residents Association, we are keen to help residents discover and enjoy this beautiful natural resource,” he said.

On the second Saturday of the month, the residents association’s committee member, Eirini Kalimeri led a spruit hike along the river.

“It is a remarkable experience. In the midst of the busy city, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by nature, with the urban infrastructure completely invisible and only unspoilt nature around you.

As unspoilt as it is, there is a litter problem. The litter is swept down the river, carried by the wind, or dropped by passers-by.”

Residents are invited to join the initiative from 10.30am on the day.
