What happened in Joburg this week?

JOBURG – We take a look at news coming from the City of Johannesburg this week.

This week in the City of Johannesburg’s news, the integrity commissioner makes fining against former Finance MMC and only six per cent of Joburg’s bridges are reported to be in a good condition.

But first, we take a look at when residents can start submitting ideas for the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which is the outline that informs the budgets each year.

The question is answered by Ward 99 councillor, Nicole van Dyk, in our weekly Councillor’s Corner column.

At a briefing on the imminent closure of parts of the M2 bridge this week, Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said a mere six per cent of Joburg’s 902 bridges are in a good condition.

The City’s roads, pavements, electrical networks, water pipes, drains and pretty much all of its infrastructure is holding on by a thread. This was the message Mashaba shared late last year and has been reiterating ever since.

The City also said that since 2013, 37 bridges have collapsed during the rainy seasons.

Finally, the City’s Speaker of Council, Vasco Da Gama, has released the Integrity Commissioner’s report into allegations against former Finance MMC, Dr Rabelani Dagada.

The Integrity Commissioner, an independent authority appointed by the council for investigating the conduct of councillors, reportedly found similarly to the forensic investigation instituted against Dagada, which led to his removal by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Dagada has, however, maintained his innocence and recently resigned as a councillor and a DA member.
